Thewatta National Basilica
The Basilica of Our Lady of Lanka is a Roman Catholic church with basilica status in Tewatte, Sri Lanka. Being thus in a somewhat distant suburb of Colombo, it comes under the purview of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Colombo and is a site of pilgrimage for Sri Lankan Catholics. The church is home to the venerated statue of Our Lady of Lanka. One of the most unique characteristics of this Basilica is its atypical architecture that has elements taken from local culture.
Services at the basilica
On weekdays and Saturdays masses are celebrated at 9.30 a.m
Blessing of the sick is conducted on Tuesdays and Thursdays after the 9.30 a.m mass.
On first Saturdays the mass is celebrated at the grotto at 7.00 a.m
On first Saturdays there is service in Tamil at the Basilica at 11.00 a.m
On Sundays the masses at the Basilica are at 11.00 a.m and 5.00 p.m in Sinhala. In Tamil at 12.15 p.m and English at 6.00 p.m
On public holidays and gays of obligation mass is celebrated at 11.00 a.m
