In a significant step towards strengthening bilateral relations and promoting regional tourism, the Government of the Maldives has officially announced the issuance of free on-arrival tourist visas valid for 90 days to Sri Lankan citizens.

According to the Presidential Media Division (PMD), this decision became effective on 29th July 2025, coinciding with President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s official visit to the Maldives. The initiative is designed to foster greater people-to-people connectivity and enhance travel convenience between the two island nations.

Entry Requirements for Sri Lankan Travelers

Under the new arrangement, Sri Lankan citizens traveling to the Maldives for tourism purposes are entitled to a free 90-day visa upon arrival, provided they meet the following conditions:

  • A valid passport with sufficient validity.
  • Proof of adequate financial resources to cover expenses during their stay in the Maldives.

Travelers are also encouraged to carry return or onward tickets and proof of accommodation, as Maldivian immigration officers retain discretion at the point of entry.

Legal Basis

The Maldivian Government confirmed that this facility has been extended under the Agreement on Visa Facilitation between Sri Lanka and the Maldives, in line with Maldivian immigration laws and regulations.

Strengthening Bilateral Ties

The introduction of this long-stay, visa-free access marks a milestone in Sri Lanka–Maldives cooperation. It is expected to:

  • Encourage tourism and cultural exchange between the two nations.
  • Promote economic activity, particularly in the travel and hospitality sectors.
  • Deepen diplomatic relations, reaffirming the longstanding friendship between Sri Lanka and the Maldives.

Key Takeaway

Sri Lankans can now travel to the Maldives more freely and enjoy an extended stay of up to 90 days without any visa fees, making the Maldives an even more accessible and attractive destination for leisure and relaxation.

For official updates and entry guidelines, travelers are advised to consult Maldives Immigration or the Maldives Ministry of Foreign Affairs prior to departure.
