A New Chapter for Sri Lanka–Maldives Travel

In a positive move to boost regional tourism, the Government of the Maldives has announced that Sri Lankan citizens are now eligible to receive a free 90-day on-arrival tourist visa.

The decision comes in conjunction with President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s official visit to the Maldives, further strengthening the bilateral relations between the two island nations.

This visa facilitation took effect from September 29, 2025, as confirmed by the Presidential Media Division of Sri Lanka.

Simplified Travel Between Neighboring Island Nations

Under this new policy, Sri Lankan visitors to the Maldives will receive a 90-day tourist visa upon arrival, at no cost.

To qualify, travelers only need:

  • A valid passport
  • Proof of sufficient funds for their stay
  • Evidence of onward or return travel

No pre-approval or visa application is required — making travel between the two island nations easier than ever.

Strengthening Regional Cooperation

The Maldivian government stated that the decision aligns with the bilateral agreement on visa facilitation signed between Sri Lanka and the Maldives.

This initiative also falls under the broader framework of enhancing mutual cooperation in tourism, investment, and people-to-people connectivity between South Asian nations.

The Maldives emphasized that the visa arrangement is implemented in accordance with its immigration laws and regulations, ensuring that travel between the two countries remains smooth and secure.

A Win for Tourism and Business Travel

This announcement is expected to significantly boost short-term tourism and cross-border travel, enabling more Sri Lankans to enjoy the Maldives’ world-famous beaches, luxury resorts, and diving experiences.

Additionally, the policy opens opportunities for business travelers, entrepreneurs, and hospitality professionals to engage more closely across both economies.

Sri Lanka and Maldives: A Bond Beyond Borders

Sri Lanka and the Maldives share long-standing cultural and economic ties, and this visa-free travel opportunity symbolizes a renewed chapter of friendship and cooperation.

With direct flights operating daily between Colombo and Malé, Sri Lankan travelers can now enjoy a hassle-free island getaway — surrounded by turquoise lagoons, coral reefs, and unparalleled Maldivian hospitality.
