Sri Lankan researcher Windhula Gammanpila has received a Best Oral Presentation Award at the 12th World Sustainability Forum (WSF-12), held in Hong Kong from 21 to 24 August 2026.

Gammanpila presented her research under the title “Equitable Electricity Transitions in Sri Lanka: A Sustainability Index Incorporating Battery Energy Storage.” The official conference programme placed her presentation in the session on Policy Frameworks for Equitable Green Transitions at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

Her recognition is a notable achievement for Sri Lankan research in energy sustainability, particularly at a time when the country is seeking to expand renewable-energy use while maintaining an electricity system that is reliable, affordable and socially equitable.

The award should, however, be reported by its correct name. Some social-media posts described it as an award for the “world’s best research paper” or “best research thesis of the year.” The available evidence supports a Best Oral Presentation Award, not a single global best-paper or best-thesis title.

The conference’s published award information states that it offered 13 Best Oral Presentation Awards and five Best Poster Awards. Oral presentations were assessed using four criteria:

Each event award included a certificate and a CHF 200 prize, according to the organiser’s published award conditions.

Gammanpila subsequently announced through her own public social-media account that she had received a Best Oral Presentation Award at WSF-12. Sri Lankan news outlets also reported the achievement following her return to the country.

The official event-awards page reviewed by Sri Lanka Directory describes the categories and judging criteria but did not display a complete text list of individual event-award recipients at the verification cut-off. Gammanpila’s award is therefore supported by her public announcement, the award image circulated with the report, the official programme confirming her presentation and the conference’s published award category.

The research presented in Hong Kong

The title recorded in the official programme is:

“Equitable Electricity Transitions in Sri Lanka: A Sustainability Index Incorporating Battery Energy Storage.”

The topic addresses an important policy challenge. A country can increase renewable-energy generation and still face questions about reliability, affordability, storage, public access, resilience and the fair distribution of costs and benefits.

A sustainability index can help decision-makers assess several dimensions together instead of relying on one figure, such as generation capacity or carbon emissions. Incorporating battery energy storage is especially relevant because batteries can store electricity when supply is available and release it when demand rises or variable renewable generation falls.

The conference title does not, by itself, establish that the proposed index has already been adopted by the Government of Sri Lanka, the Ceylon Electricity Board or the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka. The research should be understood as a contribution to assessment and policy discussion unless an implementing authority separately confirms adoption.

Gammanpila is affiliated with the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies, Faculty of Engineering, University of Sri Jayewardenepura in published academic work.

In January 2026, she was the lead author of a peer-reviewed review article titled “Aggregate sustainability indices in the electricity sector: a review,” published in Sustainable Energy Research. The subject of the Hong Kong presentation appears closely connected to that wider research direction: developing a locally meaningful method for assessing Sri Lanka’s electricity transition while retaining broader sustainability principles.

Gammanpila’s public professional profile also identifies her as an engineering graduate of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura and an Attorney-at-Law. That combination of engineering, research and law is relevant to a subject in which technical decisions, regulation and equitable policy must work together.

Viral headline versus verified fact

The achievement is genuine, but two widely shared details need correction.

About the 12th World Sustainability Forum

WSF-12 was held in Hong Kong from 21 to 24 August 2026 under the theme “Innovative Pathways for Sustainable, Resilient Cities and a Greener Planet.”

The forum brought together researchers, practitioners and policy contributors across subjects including urban planning, the circular economy, renewable-energy integration, climate adaptation, low-carbon mobility, green finance and equitable transitions.

The programme was organised into specialist sessions, enabling oral presenters to be evaluated within different sustainability themes. Gammanpila’s work appeared in the policy-framework session alongside presentations addressing municipal systems, community regulation, supply-chain decarbonisation and other aspects of a fair green transition.

What happens next

The WSF-12 organisers have invited authors of accepted abstracts to submit extended proceedings papers for the conference volume by 9 October 2026. Participants were also invited to consider submitting full manuscripts to a related special issue of the journal Sustainability.

Those publication opportunities do not mean every presentation will automatically become a proceedings paper or journal article. Submission, review, revision and acceptance remain separate stages.

For Gammanpila’s research, important future developments would include publication of the full methodology, explanation of the proposed indicators and their weights, testing against Sri Lankan electricity-sector data and engagement with policymakers and affected communities.

Any later claim that the index has been officially adopted should be supported by an announcement from the responsible Sri Lankan authority.

There is no need to turn that recognition into a fictional “world’s best thesis” title. Exaggeration can weaken a genuine accomplishment by making readers question the entire story. Accurate reporting protects the researcher’s credibility, respects the conference’s award system and gives Sri Lankan audiences a reason to celebrate with confidence.

The research itself deserves continued attention. Sri Lanka needs credible ways to measure whether its electricity transition is not only greener, but also dependable, affordable, resilient and fair. Work that connects engineering evidence with policy and social equity can contribute meaningfully to that national discussion.
