What Sri Lanka’s 2026 Henley Passport Index Position Really Means for Travellers

Sri Lankan passport ranking 2026

Sri Lanka’s passport has continued its gradual recovery in the global mobility rankings. While reports published on 22–23 July 2026 placed it 94th with access to 39 destinations, the live Henley Passport Index now displays Sri Lanka at 93rd with a mobility score of 40—highlighting how monthly updates can change the figures.

Sri Lanka’s passport has recorded another encouraging improvement in the global mobility rankings, marking a significant recovery from the country’s 107th-place position in 2021.

Sri Lankan media reports published in July 2026—including the Ada Derana report accompanying this story—announced that the passport had advanced to 94th position in the Henley Passport Index. Those reports placed Sri Lanka at 94th with access to approximately 39 destinations without obtaining a traditional visa before departure.

However, the official live Henley ranking currently lists Sri Lanka in 93rd position with a mobility score of 40, alongside Libya. This appears to reflect a later data refresh or a difference between ranking snapshots, as Henley updates the index monthly to capture changes in international visa policies.

How the Henley Passport Index Works

The Henley Passport Index assesses 199 passports against 227 destinations using travel information supplied by the International Air Transport Association and additional research conducted by Henley & Partners. It has tracked international passport mobility for 20 years and is updated monthly.

A passport receives one point when its holder can enter a destination visa-free, obtain a visa on arrival, receive a visitor’s permit on arrival or use a qualifying electronic travel authority. A destination requiring a conventional visa or government-approved e-visa before departure receives no point.

This distinction is important. A score of 40 does not necessarily mean Sri Lankans can enter 40 destinations without completing any formalities. Some may require an arrival visa, entry fee, online authority, confirmed accommodation, return ticket or proof of sufficient funds.

From 107th Place to a Stronger Position

Sri Lanka fell to 107th position in 2021, before moving to 102nd in 2022, 100th in 2023 and 96th in 2024. July 2026 reports placed the country at 94th, while the live Henley table subsequently displayed 93rd.

Historical reporting indicates that Sri Lanka occupied 88th position in 2014. The present result can therefore be described as the country’s strongest general ranking in more than a decade, although annual comparisons should be made carefully because visa scores, tied positions and the structure of the ranking change over time.

A Positive Direction—but a Large Mobility Gap Remains

Sri Lanka’s improvement is encouraging, particularly after the low point reached in 2021. Easier mobility can support tourism, international business, education, professional networking, family connections and participation in global events.

Nevertheless, Sri Lanka remains far below the most powerful passports. Singapore leads the July 2026 index with access to 192 destinations, while Japan, South Korea and the United Arab Emirates share second position with access to 188. The global average passport now provides access to 108 destinations—more than twice Sri Lanka’s current score.

Henley’s analysis suggests that passport power is influenced by diplomatic engagement, international cooperation, economic relationships, stability and reciprocal mobility agreements. Sri Lanka’s long-term progress will therefore depend on sustained diplomacy and practical travel agreements rather than ranking movements alone.

What Travellers Must Check Before Departure

A Henley mobility score is a comparative indicator—not a guarantee of admission. Henley itself advises travellers to verify current requirements with the relevant embassy, immigration authority or qualified travel provider before making arrangements.

A Welcome Milestone for Sri Lankans Worldwide

The latest movement represents a welcome sign of recovery for Sri Lankan travellers and communities overseas. It should be celebrated as progress—but also viewed as encouragement for stronger diplomatic engagement, wider reciprocal arrangements and greater international connectivity.

SLD encourages Sri Lankan travellers to remain informed, use official sources and verify destination-specific requirements before booking. A stronger passport is not merely a ranking: it can create easier pathways for business, education, tourism, family connections and global Sri Lankan participation.
